I may not know too many things well, but one topic I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about is shopping. At one time or another, we've all had to shop within certain financial limits, and with a recession on our hands it's something we've become all too familiar with.
Today, there's tons of sites on the Web that'll instruct you on how to shop cheaply - whether it's emulating the latest celeb looks or finding a perfect dress for a special occasion. There are even sites that'll help you copy a starlet's look under $100!
While these sites may seem great (who doesn't want an entire outfit for under $100?), here are some tips to keep in mind when scouring these resources:
*Know when to invest.
Spotting a pair of $25 heels online may seem like a fabulous find, but before you go ordering a pair in every color take into account some of these points. If those heels are coming from Delia's, is it even worth the $25? Unless it's a quality brand whose price has been reduced, reduced, reduced, you should probably hold off.
On the other hand, there are certain staples that require your investment - i.e., a pair of comfortable, black heels that will last years and will serve a purpose over and over. Invest in basic staples that can be worn several ways.
Go for something more demure.
*Know where to shop when trying out a trend.
We don't have budgets celebrities have - it's as simple as that. They can try out trends without worrying about the price. For most of us, this isn't the case (myself included). When you want to try out a trend - i.e., a statement necklace - know where your resources are. Places like Target and Forever 21 are great for costume jewelry and don't require you to spend lots.
Of course, this varies with each type of trend. For example, if you wanted to try out wide-leg jeans, I wouldn't advise you going to Forever 21 - sure, the price would be cheap, but remember the quality you're getting. For something like this, I'd recommend going somewhere like H&M - I absolutely love their jeans! But it's also about knowing your body type and which brands fit you the best. And remember, if you can't find what you're looking for within your budgetary limits, don't settle for less quality. Trends come and go, by the time you expend all your energy searching for pieces for one trend, the next one is already in.
The Internet is a great resource for things like this. You can research what other shoppers have said about any sort of trend, and where the best place is to buy. The same goes for investment pieces - before making a major purchase, read up on what reviews shoppers have given the piece you're looking for.
*Don't buy just to buy.
Spotting a cute top in a store might make you giddy with excitement, but don't buy it just for the hell of having it. Chances are it'll probably sit in the back of your closet collecting dust until you give it away.
If you happen to stumble upon something you MUST have, one tip I have is to put the item on hold and sleep on it. Usually when I shop, I'll spot something that I think I NEED - but 15 minutes later the feeling's subsided and I've tossed the thought to the wayside. Don't buy things just so you can amass your closet with crap - it's a waste of your time AND money!
